C’est la balade des Xsaras !! Loeb a survolé cette journée avec un Sordo accrocheur, Gardemeister 3ème est déjà a plus de 2 minutes. Une journée avec une météo difficile , les choix de pneus ont été cruciaux. Ils ont marqué cette journée :

  • Loeb : sur une autre planète, ce rallye, c’est vraiment son jardin !
  • Sordo : nominé et toujours là. Certains pensaient qu’il ne pourrait pas être aussi performant avec une Xsara 2006 avec la pression de la nomination, il est en train de prouver tout le contraire
  • Les fords : à la ramasse totale ! On s’attendait à un combat au sommet Marcus-Seb qui n’a pas lieu. A voir si demain sur un terrain plus favorable, elles arrivent à faire mieux
  • Sarrazin : très décevant. Après un excellent temps au shakedown, on s’attendait à beaucoup mieux. Il est même derrière Atkinson ! Il explique tout ça par le choix de pneus…
  • Duval : décidemment, c’est trés difficile de rester sur la route. François est très rapide mais il est trop souvent à la limite, ainsi il est impossible de ne pas la dépasser… Avec ses problèmes de budget, il ne repartira pas en super rally
  • Pons : s’il pilote encore en WRC l’année prochaine, c’est que ses soutiens sont vraiment très très puissants !

Les commentaires des pilotes en cette fin de journée :
Sébastien Loeb : « Lorsqu’on a les bons pneus, c’est évidemment plus facile. Nous avons eu les bonnes infos, et effectué les bons choix. Un super travail d’équipe. Dani a très bien roulé, nous avons réussi à creuser l’écart. Mais nous allons rester très concentrés pour éviter de commettre la moindre erreur, que ce soit dans les choix de demain où au volant… »

Dani Sordo : « L’équipe m’a préparé une Xsara superbe, très facile à conduire, qui m’a permis d’être en confiance même dans les conditions très délicates que nous avons rencontrées. Seb est à sa place, c’est lui le plus rapide. Ma deuxième position actuelle me comble : le team m’a demandé de marquer le plus de points possible. Je vais m’appliquer au maximum dans ce but… »

Marcus Grönholm : « It was a hard and difficult day, and not one that I enjoyed, » he said. « I’ve not tested in the rain on asphalt with the Focus because we couldn’t find any rain this summer! Our settings this morning were too soft for the conditions and I had a lot of understeer and oversteer with the car. I went off the road so many times on the first stage that I couldn’t believe what was happening. The rain this afternoon was incredible. The forecast said it would be dry after lunch so I chose hard, dry weather tyres and I couldn’t do anything apart from try to stay on the road. I took it easy in the rain but found it hard to get my confidence and rhythm back when it stopped. It’s difficult to choose tyres when the weather changes so quickly and we made a mistake this afternoon. But there are still many kilometres remaining and tomorrow’s stages won’t be easy for anyone so we will see what happens then. »

Petter Solberg : « I started this morning just happy to be able to drive at all, but in fact the day has been pretty good. The rain is the main thing; some drivers have been extremely fortunate with the way it fell, some of us have not! I feel that we have done a good progression with the car, but obviously our tyre choices let us down and we weren’t able to gather much information from the last three stages as the rain just poured down. Tomorrow I’ll try hard and do what I can. I think a podium finish is possible; we just have to get the tyre choices right. »

Stephane Sarrazin : « Not great. This morning I had wet tyres for roads that turned out to be dry, and this afternoon a slick tyre for roads that were mainly wet. Unfortunately, the wild weather meant I had the wrong tyre all of the time. My worst moment was on SS7, I spun and lost about 20 seconds, the road was fully wet and on the slick tyre it was unbelievably slippery. Tomorrow, my wish is that I have the right tyres for the right conditions! »
