C’est une domination des Xsaras dans cette première boucle, Loeb et Sordo se partagent les scratches : 2 chacun ! Le temps était menaçant, avec des spéciales mouillées et d’autres plus sèches. Les ford ont opté pour des pneus pluies alors que les xsaras étaient avec des intermédiaires. Dès cette première matiné, Loeb a fait le trou, alors que Sordo a fait un trés beau début de rallye malgré des problèmes moteur. On ne parlera des performances de Pons et sa sortie endomageant l’avant de sa Xsara… Le classement à l’issu de l’ES4 et avant la deuxième boucle et le départ de l’ES5 à 14h34 :

Sebastien Loeb : « I have a harder compound than other drivers, I think it was a good choice. This stage is a bit easier »
Marcus Gronholm : « How can I be happy because we have lost so much. The problem is that I have not tested in the rain. I was in trouble the first two stages »
Daniel Sordo : « The engine of the car it stop in one corner. The time was okay and the stage was nice. The feeling with the car is incredible »
Petter Solberg : « We have a quite full cut for rain, so it didn’t help on the last two stages. I’m quite happy with what happened before »
Stephane Sarrazin : « I was with soft wet tyres so it was really really difficult »
Andreas Aigner : « Completely dry this stage and the tyre works really good on this stage »
