Les commentaires des pilotes à l’issue de la première journée du rallye d’Argentine :
Sébastien Loeb : « On se serait plutôt cru au Pays de Galles, en décembre ! Comme souvent sur ce terrain, cela n’a pas été facile. Au cours de la boucle matinale, nous avons dû nous méfier, car les ES1 et ES2 étaient noyées dans le brouillard. On n’y voyait qu’à quelques mètres ! Les fortes pluies avaient également rendu les chemins de terre très glissants avec d’incessants changements d’adhérence. Au rythme rapide où nous roulions, il était facile de faire une faute et j’ai été content de revenir à l’assistance en ayant juste effectué un petit tête-à-queue et une touchette contre un poteau. Le changement de set up a été efficace. Disposant d’une avance raisonnable, nous avons adopté un rythme un peu moins élevé. Je suis satisfait de cette première étape, mais le rallye est loin d’être terminé. Beaucoup de choses peuvent encore se produire. Les pièges à franchir demeurent nombreux jusqu’à dimanche après-midi. »
Chris Atkinson : “Today has been tough but I’m pleased with second place. I made a mistake on stage eight and we lost quite a bit of time so the gap to Petter is much smaller now. You really kick yourself when you give away that much time, but that’s what can happen in these conditions. Tomorrow we will have to push just as hard so it will be another tough day. It’s great for the team to have two cars in the top three, but Galli and Sordo are not so far behind, and we have seen how much things can change today, so it won’t be easy.”
Petter Solberg : “We had some problems today, like everyone else, but we are in third place so it’s not bad at all.I didn’t feel comfortable in the conditions on the last loop of stages today and we lost a lot of time, but we will make some more changes tonight and then keep pushing hard tomorrow. The gaps are quite small so we have to push hard but we will see. The weather was such a big part today, and it will be totally different again tomorrow so we will do our best and see how it goes.”
Gigi Galli : “This morning was probably the two most difficult stages I have ever driven, the amount of road you couldn’t see was incredible. I am very happy with my times this afternoon and it feels great to set a fastest stage time already on gravel in the Focus. The people out on the stages have been amazing. There are so many fans, even on the road sections, but they are all being marshalled very safely and it is great to see them all out cheering despite the bad weather. Today was a great day and we will see if we can keep up the speed tomorrow and continue to set fast times. I am very close to the podium now but there is a long way to the finish and finishing is how you get good results.”
Dani Sordo : « C’était effectivement très piégeux. En nous élançant 9e sur la route ce matin, nous avons été obligés d’utiliser les rails creusés dans la boue par les concurrents partis devant nous. Sur cette surface meuble à l’adhérence nulle, c’était extrêmement pénalisant. Je suis cependant satisfait de mes performances, comme ce deuxième temps dans l’ES4 que je découvrais. Les réglages définis avec l’équipe technique pour l’après-midi nous ont permis de disposer d’une C4 très performante. Nous étions à la lutte pour le podium lorsqu’un souci de direction assistée nous a ralentis dans l’ES8. Il reste deux jours pour réussir à refaire notre retard et accéder à cette place. »
Hirvonen : « I hit a big rock in a left corner with the wheel on full lock and the impact broke the bolts in the track control arm. The rock was in a rut and became exposed after the first pass through the stage so it’s not something I would have had in my pace notes. I was unlucky and I’m disappointed because the rally started well and I needed a win here and the points »
Latvala : « I didn’t enjoy the first stage and didn’t feel comfortable going into the next test.About 1km after the start I came to a flat left corner that tightened and I hit the bank. That bounced the car across the road and I rolled off the track at the next right corner. The car landed with Miikka’s side up against a small tree. Spectators helped us move the car off the tree and rolled it back onto its wheels before finding a small road that led back to the stage. The damage wasn’t big, just a cracked windscreen and some body damage. »
